GREAT AUTUMN LANDSCAPES

Sailing the world’s great rivers during autumn is a wonderful way to see the landscapes in their spectacular autumnal glory. It’s also a great time of year to travel – the weather is cooler, and the towns are less crowded. Here are just three of our favourite autumn river landscapes…

RHINE DISCOVERY

Every bend in the legendary River Rhine brings a wonderful new sight, and the landscapes are especially beautiful in autumn, when the fruits of the forest are ripe and the colours turn to deep reds, russets and tawny browns. It's a very special time of year to explore this beautiful and historic part of Europe, on an award-winning Viking Longship.

PORTUGAL’S RIVER OF GOLD

Named River of Gold for the way it sparkles in the sunlight, Portugal’s River Douro takes on an even more magical light in the autumn. The weather is usually still warm but not scorching hot, making a river cruise along these vine-clad banks a particularly lovely way to soak up the scenery and, of course, the wonderful wines and ports.

WATERWAYS OF THE TSARS

On Viking’s river cruise between St. Petersburg and Moscow you’ll sail alongside some magnificent landscapes in the northern part of Russia, where the air is clean and crisp, and the sight of birch forests reflected in the water is completely mesmerising. Many of the smaller towns appear little changed through time.
