SCULPTING THE VIKING OCEAN CRUISES GARDEN

Construction of the Viking Ocean Cruises Show Garden for RHS Chelsea Flower Show is now well underway, and what a wonderful garden it will be! Contemporary yet elegant with beautiful clean lines, Alan Gardner’s design celebrates the launch of our first ocean ship Viking Star, and evokes the energy, colour and dynamism of the sea.

The garden features an exciting, polished steel sculpture by artist Patrick Hurst. The sculpture embodies the Norse tale of Skadi, the goddess of the mountains and Njord, the god of the sea. According to legend, the couple couldn’t agree on where to make their home – mountains or sea – and so they separated. The Norse god Odin then turned them into a constellation of stars so that they could live together elsewhere.

Patrick’s interpretation of the story has led to the creation of a two sheets of polished steel that combine both mountain and wave shapes, with their constellation cut through the steel. The profile of the piece also resembles the bow of Viking Star. You can see how this inspiring sculpture is taking shape in Patrick’s workshop in our time-lapse video here >
