(easygoing music) - [Mary] From the Ancient Greeks to Vincent Van Gogh, Provence, France has drawn visitors for centuries.
-
Shaped in part by the Rhone River, the waterway provides a great pathway to all the good stuff this region has to offer.
-
All you need is a longship and a little taste for adventure.
-
A quest for good taste led me to Magali Martinez.
-
Her family has owned this olive grove for six generations.
-
How old are these trees? - [Magali] The oldest, 400 years old.
-
Grandfather love say to me when I was young.
-
Do you know Magali, olive trees, it's like humans, we can better with age.
-
So to taste an olive oil, you need a glass. - [Mary] Okay? - You have to smell it.
-
Now you have to put it in your mouth and you turn around time. - This is liquid gold. (Magali laughs) Cheers. - Cheers. - [Mary] Savoring that wonderful flavor.
-
I took paddle to the river with Viking Ambassador at large, Jean Newman Glock.
-
Have you ever seen Avignon by canoe? - I have not, but I suspect we're heading. - Yeah, let's do it. - [Jean] I'm glad I'm with an athlete.
-
This is Avignon, the city of the Popes.
-
The papacy moved here in the 14th century. - [Mary] Why do you like to travel, Jean? - [Jean] It makes the world smaller.
-
Every minute you're traveling on the river, you are seeing something fascinating that brings you closer to the culture today and the culture of ancient times. - [Mary] It's funny how the farther you travel, the closer you can feel to things.
