Explore More: Amsterdam, Netherlands

  • Amsterdam is a delightfully eclectic destination rich in architectural diversity, great museums and bicycles, over a million of them.

  • If you have a little extra time in Amsterdam, there are a few things you really should try to experience.

  • I find the easiest, most relaxing way to make your way around the city is via its canals.

  • There are 65 miles of them, and once you're on a boat, you're likely to stay on board longer than you originally intended.

  • In the museum quarter, there's plenty to intrigue the eye.

  • Everything from classics at the Rijksmuseum, impressionism at the Van Gogh Museum, to the Stedelijk for contemporary works, and there's even a diamond museum.

  • As you explore the quaint side streets, keep your eyes peeled for a Jenever sign.

  • Inside, you'll find micro distilleries producing variations of this Dutch specialty drink.

  • Derived from the juniper berry, Jenever tastes a lot like gin and is certainly worth sampling.

  • And it's really difficult to top a quiet stroll through one of the city's canal side flower shops.

  • The bursts of color and smells will certainly capture attention and it's a great place to pick up some gifts for home.

  • I find Amsterdam to be one of the friendliest cities in the world, and it's an easy place to feel like you're a local.

A seasonal guide of Amsterdam for the curious traveler

Amsterdam is a delightfully eclectic destination rich in architectural diversity, world-class museums and almost a million bicycles. Choose to explore the city via its 165 historic canals or browse a canal-side flower shop for an authentic introduction to the city, keeping in mind that Amsterdam’s atmosphere will differ depending on the season.

Spring: A season of bloom and celebration

Many travelers find that spring is the most vibrant time to experience the Netherlands. Amsterdam’s Tulip Festival, an annual celebration of the country’s most iconic flower, is typically held throughout the month of April. With a tulip to represent every Amsterdammer, the celebration features tens of thousands of tulips displayed across public spaces, museums, hotel gardens and city squares throughout Amsterdam. The Tulip Festival is city‑wide and free, with installations appearing in places such as Museumplein, Vondelpark, the Rijksmuseum gardens and other neighborhoods. It is often confused with tulip season in Keukenhof Gardens, which is one of the Netherlands’ most dazzling spring spectacles. From mid‑March to mid‑May, the gardens come to life with more than seven million blooming bulbs, creating sweeping carpets of tulips, hyacinths, daffodils and specialty varieties you will not see anywhere else.

Summer: Extended daylight and outdoor living

Summer brings long days and a lively energy to the city, and the Dutch take full advantage of the mild weather. “Terrace season” refers to the period when locals congregate at outdoor tables to enjoy the city views and regional cuisine. With extended daylight hours, you can also spend more time exploring Amsterdam’s scenic canals or while away the time at a sidewalk café.

Given that this is peak travel season, you may experience higher guest numbers at major landmarks, such as the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum. We recommend visiting these institutions early in the day to enjoy the Impressionist and contemporary works in a more tranquil setting.

Autumn: The allure of the shoulder season

For guests who prefer a more understated experience, autumn is an ideal time to visit. As the leaves change along the canal banks, the city takes on a thoughtful and calm atmosphere. Visiting in September or October allows you to explore quaint side streets with fewer crowds, offering a more intimate look at the city. In the shoulder season, it is easier to partake in local experiences such as sampling a glass of jenever, a Dutch spirit derived from the juniper berry, at a local distillery or trying bitterballen—crunchy, fried balls of chopped beef, butter, herbs and spices with a cold pint of beer.

Winter: Artistry in light and tradition

Winter in Amsterdam is far from bleak. The city embraces the colder months with elegant holiday displays and cozy traditions that reflect its historic charm. For example, the Amsterdam Light Festival typically runs late November to mid‑January and brings together international artists as they create stunning light installations best viewed from the water. A voyage through the canals during this time of year provides a different perspective on the city's architectural diversity. The winter is also an ideal time for indoor exploration. You may wish to spend your afternoon taking in masterpieces in the Rijksmuseum or discovering the Diamond Museum.

Determining the best time to visit Amsterdam

The best time to visit Amsterdam depends on your personal interests. If you seek the colorful spectacle of tulip fields, plan your voyage for spring. If you prefer a tranquil journey with more room to explore the historic landmarks, the autumn shoulder season may be your best option. Regardless of when you choose to explore, we look forward to sharing the city with you on one of our Amsterdam river cruises.
