Scenic Sailing: Wachau Valley

Sail through a scenic tapestry of hillside vineyards, charming towns and castle ruins in Austria’s Wachau Valley, celebrated as perhaps the most scenic stretch of the Danube. Journey 18 miles through this vast UNESCO World Heritage Site, where the river courses through idyllic countryside hamlets. Gaze upon the hibernating, wine-producing villages—the legacy of vintners that stretch as far back as Celtic and Roman times and an echo of the more than 30 monasteries that served as vineyards in Renaissance days.

Grein, Austria

Grein is a small, well-preserved city along the Danube River, set against a backdrop of picturesque landscapes and rich history. Its old town is a collection of charming houses, narrow streets and vibrant squares. The Stadttheater Grein has a unique wooden construction, and its original 18th-century stage machinery is still used to put on performances. Perched above the town and overlooking the Danube sits the elegant Schloß Greinburg, the country’s oldest residential castle. Completed in 1493, it has been the home of the Saxe-Coburg and Gotha family since 1823.
